Coyotes defeat defending champions

The University of South Dakota Coyotes beat out the defending Football Championship Subdivision champions and Division I top ranked Eastern Washington Eagles 30-17 at the DakotaDome Saturday.

The Coyotes jumped out to an early 21-0 lead in the first half after a 2-yard run by senior quarterback Dante Warren, a 48-yard pass from Warren to senior wide receiver Jeremy Blount and a 67-yard interception return from senior defensive back Jim Thompson.

Eastern Washington responded with a touchdown before the half ended.

Another Eastern Washington touchdown and field goal in the third quarter brought the score to 24-17 going into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Coyotes scored two crucial field goals from sophomore kicker Kevin Robb to extend their lead to 30-17.

USD will face NAIA opponent Northwestern Oklahoma State on Sept. 17 at the DakotaDome.
