Q&A: Reddy enjoys safe and quiet Midwest life

Freshman Yamini Reddy is a member of the USD women’s tennis team from Bengelore, India.
Reddy led the Coyotes in wins during 2012 with a singles record of 29-7. She also went 5-2 in conference play as well as 14-4 in doubles action.
Kate Turner: Why did you choose USD?
Yamini Reddy: I picked USD mainly because of tennis, plus it’s has a nice campus and it is small, and it seemed like an all around nice university.
KT: What is your favorite part about playing tennis?
YR: It’s fun, different and something I’ve been doing for a long time.
KT: What is the best part of USD’s tennis team?
YR: I like that we’re all international and everyone is nice to work with and when we’re together it feels like home.
KT: What is your favorite part about the midwest?
YR: I like that it’s a safe area and it’s quiet. Also, you have all four seasons and that is different from my home.
KT: What is your favorite type of music?
YR: I listen to everything honestly, but mostly Michael Jackson.
KT: What is the first thing you’ll do when you get home for summer?
YR: Eat my mom’s home cooked food.
KT: What is your plan for this summer?
YR: I’m going to go home and workout and take a break from studying. Just relax. But, I will actually miss living here.
KT: What is your favorite American food?
YR: I like everything, the desserts. I like to try anything sweet.
KT: What is your favorite outfit to wear?
YR: Just shorts and a T-shirt.
KT: What is your favorite hobby besides tennis?
YR: I love cooking and baking. Plus just hiking and walking around.
KT: If you were rich what would you do with the money?
YR: I would invest it in opening up restaurants and I would buy a nice property in a nice area.
KT: American boys versus Hometown boys?
YR: Boys from home, well I don’t get boys from here, and the American concept of dating I don’t understand. Here you talk a lot before dating and at home it’s just dating.
KT: What is the weirdest gift you’ve ever received?
YR: A bunch of postcards . A man and his wife collected post cards from all around South Dakota years and years ago. He gave me this huge bunch of them. It was very nice, but it was the weirdest thing.
KT: What is your favorite slang?
YR: “Whatevs” —it’s just funny.
KT: What is your most embarrassing moment here at USD?
YR: I tripped and fell right outside the MUC when I was crossing the light because I had four seconds left and I ran across. My flip-flop got stuck and I tripped over that.
KT: What is your biggest fear?
YR: Washing your socks with your clothes and the putting your shoes in the same suitcase as your clothes without them being in a bag.
KT: What is your favorite place in Vermillion?
YR: The river, it’s just so peaceful and refreshing and you don’t feel like you’re in Vermillion and you can go and relax. You don’t feel like you’re in school anymore.
KT: What is your favorite thing to do in Vermillion?
YR: Just head to Burbank and relax and play games.
KT: What is the number one thing people should know about you?
YR: I am extremely clumsy.
