June 3 marked the start of Vermillion’s 7th annual swim camp for children.

The camp is held on the University of South Dakota campus and is led by swimming and diving coach Jason Mahowald and assistant coach Chris Hansman.

“The goal of the camp is to teach kids proper technique, have fun and make them better swimmers,” Hansman said.

This camp is divided into two different sessions. Last week, 38 eight to 13-year-olds took to the pool and Sunday, high school students 14 to 18-years-old have a chance in the water.

“90 percent of the kids do some sort of swim such as club swimming,” said Hansman. “Most are competitive swimmers or just getting into it.”

Practices take place in the DakotaDome, as well as the Vermillion outdoor pool. Along with practicing on campus, kids stay in the dorms on campus during the camp.

Two USD swimmers, junior Brooke Zhorne and sophomore Miranda Vlach-Buller, are camp councilors and assist the coaches.

Students participating in the camp come from around the area, including South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa.
