Coyotes defend Dome against Colgate

The University of South Dakota Coyotes football home opener went as planned, as Joe Glenn snagged his first victory as head coach, defeating the Colgate Raiders 31-21 on Saturday afternoon.

The defense got off to a shaky start, giving up a touchdown on Colgate’s opening drive.  The Coyotes were able to keep their composure, with senior running back Marcus Sims leading the way for the offense.  Sims finished the game with 14 carries for 127 yards and a touchdown with quarterback Josh Vander Maten adding another 73 yards rushing and two scores.

The defense came up strong in the second half, holding the Raiders to just seven points while bagging five sacks.  An interception by junior defensive back D.

J. Wakes with 1:20 remaining in the fourth quarter inevitably sealed the victory, as USD was able to run out the clock to end the game.

Saturday’s victory puts the Coyotes at 1-1.

With a bye week scheduled for Sept. 15, the Coyotes will spend the extra time preparing for their road game in Evanston, Ill. as they take on Big Ten opponent Northwestern on Sept. 22.
