The Rant:Dear fellow students of USD
Dear fellow students of USD,
I don’t know about you all, but I love having everyone else back on campus. It’s just a breath of fresh air to see the school more populated again.
But there is another side of being back to school. We are in college, after all. It’s time to hunker back down and become a student once more. Yes, there is time to have fun while at school – people go out every weekend and party. It’s plain to see that on Sunday mornings, just walk into the MUC and count how many people are hungover. But the true job of every student back at school is to learn.
I don’t know about you, but my high school graduation speeches droned on about “being the future of our country,” and how “our generation was the one to carry the country.” The valedictorian over-did it, to be sure. But he did have a string of truth in there, too. We are the future, obviously. We are going to graduate from college and move into the real world.
In order to help our world’s future, we need to begin working hard now. So go to class! Learn! No matter if it’s a class you love or hate, you’re going to need to be in it anyway. So take what you can from it. And don’t just hand back your brain to learning in the classroom. Go out and learn from someone other than your professor. Common sense is another intelligence that will be needed in the real world — and, let’s face it, not many people have that these days. It’s going to be needed.
Remember that while school is fun, our future is based on the learning and intelligence we gain. So go to class, learn and be ready to apply it in the future.
Sincerely,
Corey Wannamaker, Sophomore
