Injury-prone USD women’s team seek crucial win vs. Dakota State
The University of South Dakota women’s basketball team hasn’t had the best start to its 2012-13 season, but the team is looking to improve upon their 3-5 record against Dakota State Dec. 6.
USD head coach Amy Williams, who earned her 100th career victory Dec. 1 against Utah Valley, is hoping to create a mindset that can help the team boost energy and hopefully score some more hoops for the Coyotes as well.
“We are striving to have a constant and steady presence on the defensive end of the floor,” Williams said. “We want to be able to play hard all of the time and hopefully start scoring some baskets.”
Sophomore Nicole Seekamp has taken charge of the Coyotes’ offense this season, scoring 27 points in the team’s victory against Utah Valley Dec. 1.
“We’ve had a lot of adversity that we’ve gone through with so many injuries that we had coming into the season,” Seekamp said. “It’s important that we focus on what we can fix right now. The season is still relatively young and we will be prepared once conference time comes.”
Senior Tempestt Wilson said the team looks to capitalize on DSU’s weakness.
“We are doing all of the little things like rebounding and trying to get our offense to come together as a team,” Wilson said. “We are making sure we are all on the same page while preparing for the game against Dakota State.”
Williams said the hard-working mentality she implemented at the beginning of the season will be expected from the team against Dakota.
“Right now, we are disappointed in our performance, but we can’t worry about that right now,” Williams said. “It’s important that we keep working and hopefully that hard work will pay off down the stretch.”
