COLUMN: Coyote Confessions: positive or negative?

USD Confessions has become a popular Facebook page over the last month. Students like the page and get to see their peer’s deepest secrets.

Some are funny, some are sad and some are just plain disgusting. I believe USD Confessions has its positives but also carries some negatives.

The positives can be found in the posts that compliment others on their qualities. Whether it is from someone being attractive or doing a great deed, these anonymous confessions can brighten anyone’s day.

I also feel the negative confessions bring people together by standing up against negative and ignorant posts.

I remember reading one confession of a guy who only liked his girls at 100 pounds.

It was great to see a lot of the responses to the post thought women of all sizes are beautiful and should be treated that way. The confessions page can also bring entertainment with drunken stories or embarrassing moments. College is stressful but the occasional entertainment can help students take a quick break from studying to clear their minds.

There are obvious negatives to this page as well. Social media is already easily abused when not anonymous. However, people’s real colors can show when they post an anonymous confession. Something that should be used for good can be abused when people call out a certain individual and start calling that individual derogatory names.

It is important to keep in mind the rule elementary school taught us, “If you do not have anything nice to say, do not say anything at all.” Although it might be an overused quote it does point out an important life lesson of respecting others’ emotions. It should be a goal to spread love and compassion toward everyone, whether a comment is anonymous or not.

USD Confessions has definitely sparked a lot of people’s interest. I think it is a great source of entertainment but should not be abused by people who feel the need to bring others down. The admins. are doing a great job of making student’s laugh and bringing a community of students together.

If they continue on this track, USD Confessions will become more successful and a tradition for the school.
