Q & A: Menking shows goofy side to softball
EDITOR’S NOTE: The Volante sat down with Ross Menking, the captain of The Pecan Sandies, one of USD’s intramural softball teams. Menking offered a humorous take on his team, explaining the team’s unique name, lamenting the team’s worst player, and who he believes is ‘juicing’ for the season.
Creighton Hoefer: How did you come up with that name?
Ross Menking: They (USD intramural league officials) turned down all our other names. They were too low-brow names, I guess. They weren’t a fan of “Cleats and Cleavage”. After they voted down some other names, we came down three: Toxic Milkshake, Wolf Chili, and Pecan Sandys.
CH: : Do you have equal gender representation?

RM: We have more girls than guys now and that was for good reason. We cleaned house over the offseason. We hadn’t been able to contend the year before so we decided to trim some of the fat and get some new talent.
CH: Who is your best player?
RM: Shane Barrows
CH: Who is your worst player?
RM: Chad Hahler
CH: Why is he the worst player on your team?
RM: He’s short, somewhat unathletic. He benched himself last year due to a bad batting average. He also had some previous injuries. He plays outfield.
CH: Did you put him in the outfield for a specific reason? To minimize the damage?
RM: He actually went there himself, so he knows he’s bad. We really don’t have too much control over our team. Its a free-for-all as far as strategy goes.
CH: Who are you the most worried about potentially taking HGH or PEDs to gain an edge?
RM: That would be our newly acquired player, John Blum. He hit three home runs last season for a different team. He’s looking to improve after last year obviously and he got really big in a short amount of time from last year. But we (the team) aren’t mad about it.
