USD assistant coach James named interim head coach
Three days after longtime University of South Dakota men’s basketball coach Dave Boots announced his retirement, USD athletic director David Herbster named assistant coach Joey James interim head coach Friday.
In a statement released Friday, Herbster said James will take over as head coach effective immediately, and a national search will be conducted at the end of the 2013-14 season.
James, 37, spent two seasons playing for Boots and the Coyotes men’s basketball team from 1997-99 and in 2003 was hired as an assistant for the USD men’s basketball team.
In the release, Herbster said James’ involvement in the program makes him the immediate choice to lead the Coyotes in 2013-14.

“We are fortunate to have someone of James’ experience and caliber to give us leadership and continuity for the immediate future,” Herbster said. “His knowledge of the game, ability to recruit and to relate to the players makes him the right coach to lead the Coyote men this season.”
