Second half dooms USD football at Southern Illinois
An extra week of preparation wasn’t enough for the University of South Dakota football team.
The Coyotes lost in every fashion Saturday afternoon during the second half of their Missouri Valley Football Conference debut to Southern Illinois, losing 41-10.
The Coyotes and Salukis were tied at 10 at half, but the Salukis took care of business in the second half, scoring 31 unanswered points. It was a similar tale the previous week for Southern Illinois.
The Salukis started off conference week with a 34-17 win over Western Illinos. In that contest, Southern Illinois outscored Western Illinois 24-3 in the second half as well.
It wasn’t a memorable game offensively for the Coyotes, as sophomore quarterback Ryan Saeger was 13-27 through the air for 191 yards with zero touchdowns. Sophomore running back Trevor Bouma led the rushing with 60 yards on 14 carries.
The Coyotes will try to reconfigure as they host Northern Iowa for their homecoming Dakota Days game Saturday.
Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. in the DakotaDome.
