Bird Watchers Invited To Help With Annual Count

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota bird watchers can join millions of others from around the world this weekend in the 17th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count.

The event runs Friday through Monday and there’s no cost to take part. The reports create a picture of where different types of birds are located for use in science and conservation. The program is led by the National Audubon Society, the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology and Bird Studies Canada.

During the four days, volunteers count birds for a minimum of 15 minutes and track the highest number of each bird species they see together at one time. Public lands, local parks and their backyards are among the best places to spot the birds.
