Brandon Bos hits 1000 career points
Now joining 43 former Coyotes in the exclusive 1,000-point club, senior guard Brandon Bos is used to hearing people say they expect him to be a little full of himself.
But Bos, who joined the 1,000-career-point club against Fort Wayne Jan. 10, doesn’t even take credit for achieving this feat.
“I’ve had a great group of guys and coaches around me the last four years,” Bos said. “It sounds like an individual accomplishment, but if guys don’t give me the ball in the right place, or if the coaches don’t put me in the right place, it’s not even possible.”
His humbleness is something his teammates and coaches have also observed. For first-year head coach Craig Smith, this was something he noticed the first time he met Bos.
“He’s a class act — very humble guy,” Smith said. “He’s down to earth, has good presence and speaks very well. He’s got that Canadian accent yet still seems like the all-American kid.”
Bos said he’s a serious player, gets down to business on the court and works hard to win. Off the court, he’s almost the complete opposite.
“I like to joke around with the guys when we’re not playing,” Bos said. “I like to have a lot of fun. I would say I’m almost two different people.”
Junior Casey Kasperbauer, Bos’ teammate and roommate, sees the difference in personality first-hand.
“Off the court we’re very similar, to the point that we can get sick of each other,” Kasperbauer said. “We’ve gotten very close, and it’s funny to see how similar we are even though he’s not from America.”
Bos, who is from Markham, Ontario, a city close to Toronto, still sticks to his Canadian roots.
Although Bos is a basketball player, he also likes hockey — a sport commonly associated with Canada.
“This was the first year I was unable to go home and play pond hockey with my friends, which was unfortunate,” Bos said.
His love for hockey is something that hasn’t gone unnoticed by his teammates.
“That’s one thing I don’t think people know about Brandon,” Kasperbauer said. “Nobody realizes how big of a hockey fan he is.”
On top of being a hockey fan, Bos has many other interests pertinent to his home country. Bos said his favorite NBA team is the Toronto Raptors, and working for them someday would be a dream come true.
Bos is a sports management major at the University of South Dakota and is double minoring in business and entrepreneurship. He hopes to either work in the professional sports industry or start his own company someday.
But for now, he’s only focused on basketball.
“I’m getting a little depressed that my career at USD is about to end,” Bos said. “I’m trying to focus one game at a time and enjoy every moment.”
The Coyotes have six regular season games remaining before the Summit League conference tournament begins. For Bos and his teammates, making the NCAA tournament is the end goal.
“My favorite memories from playing (for USD) are beating SDSU when all the fans pack the Dome,” Bos said. “But winning road games are also special to me. I’m hoping to make the NCAA tournament this year so that my favorite moment can change, though.”
