College Students Lobby Against Concealed Weapons On Campus

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota college students are lobbying lawmakers ahead of a state House vote on a measure that would allow people 21 years or older to carry a concealed weapon on the six public university’s campuses.

South Dakota Student Federation Executive Director Jess Peterson said a group of students urged lawmakers on the House floor Thursday to defeat the proposal.

Peterson says defeating the measure is important to South Dakota students because allowing concealed weapons on campus makes students feel uncomfortable.

Allyson Helms, a sophomore at South Dakota State University, says lawmakers have been excited to see college students engaged and says she hopes the bill is defeated on the House floor.

Supporters of the proposal say it was prompted by students who want to defend themselves on college campuses.
