PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Gov. Dennis Daugaard is forming a group that aims to improve the achievement levels and graduation rates of American Indian students.

The Native American Student Achievement Advisory Council will include tribal leaders and representatives from the Indian Education Advisory Council, the South Dakota Departments of Education and Tribal Relations, and education groups.

Daugaard says Native American students face unique challenges in graduating high school prepared for postsecondary education and careers. He says it’s an issue that must be confronted.

The council will report its findings to the Legislature and the governor by Dec. 1.
