Funds Available For Specialty Crop Projects In South Dakota

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The South Dakota Department of Agriculture has federal money available to help producers enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops.

The money is available through the Specialty Crops Block Grant program that was authorized under the 2014 Farm Bill. The federal government defines specialty crops as fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, and horticulture and nursery crops.

State agriculture officials say the funds can be used for projects that involve marketing, research, food safety, nutrition, distribution and various other uses to advance the specialty crop industry in South Dakota.

The state’s priorities for the grants include local foods initiatives and university research.

Groups interested in receiving a grant must apply by April 4.
