Panel Approves Allowing Concealed Weapons On SD Campuses

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A legislative panel has approved a measure to allow some people to carry a concealed weapon on the state’s six public university campuses.

The House Local Government Committee on Thursday voted for the proposal, which authorizes people who are at least 21 years old to carry a concealed firearm.

Republican Rep. Jim Stalzer says his plan was sparked by students who want to defend themselves on college campuses who don’t believe in gun-free zones.

The proposal allows banning weapons only in student housing.

South Dakota Board of Regents Executive Director and CEO Jack Warner says shootings on campuses are rare and the measure would make students feel less safe.

Student representatives also strongly opposed the measure, which now goes to the full House of Representatives.
