ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) — Hundreds of residents in the Aberdeen region are seeking changes in the operation of the city’s contracted animal shelter.
The American News reports ( ) that resident Talese Nelson this week presented the City Council with a petition bearing 402 signatures.
The petition seeks several changes, including more information on how cases are handled; the creation of a “trap, neuter and release” program for stray cats; and a provision allowing for volunteer help.
The petition also seeks heat and air conditioning for the animals, but police say the shelter already has heating and cooling.
Nelson says the purpose of the petition is to try to improve conditions at the pound.
City Manager Lynn Lander says an animal control officer is at the shelter daily.
