Mission Man Convicted In Shooting Sentenced To Prison

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A Mission man has been sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison for a shooting that wounded another person.

Authorities say 29-year-old Vernon Schmidt Jr. pointed a handgun at a person and waved it around during an argument in May 2014. The gun went off, hitting the other person in the chest and neck area, causing a serious injury.

U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson says Schmidt was convicted of assault resulting in serious bodily injury and was sentenced this week to three years and 10 months in custody to be followed by two years of supervised release. He also was ordered to pay $900 in restitution.
