Official: Fire South Of Rapid City Has Consumed 20 Acres

Rockerville, S.D. (AP) — State officials say firefighters have stopped the progress of a wildfire they believe has covered 20 acres east of the Black Hills National Forest.

Chief Fire Management Officer Jim Strain says about 95 firefighters are battling the fire between Highway 16 and Neck Yoke Road.

No evacuations have been ordered. Officials believed earlier Saturday that 20 homes were potentially threatened by the fire. So far there has been no property damage or injuries reported.

Strain says if current conditions hold, crews can likely contain the fire by tonight. He says there are still some unchecked areas burning.

The South Dakota Department of Corrections has brought in several crews of inmates to help firefighters.

It’s still unclear what started the fire. A fire investigator is at the scene.
