Racial Tensions Continue To Mount In Rapid City

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A Justice Department official says mending racial tensions in Rapid City lies solely in the hands of the community.

Carol Russo attended a Wednesday meeting of the city’s Human Relations Commission. She said the government won’t tell the community what to do, though it can help guide the city through conflict.

Some American Indians say racial tensions were exacerbated by reports of some Native American children being subjected to racial slurs and sprayed with beer at a minor league hockey game in Rapid City in late January.

Since then, former Oglala Sioux Tribal President Bryan Brewer has formed a group to confront racism. Hundreds of Native Americans rallied outside the Civic Center Tuesday night.

Vice Chairman Andy Ainslie says the commission is developing public service announcements on better race relations.
