Rapid City School Board Asked To OK $6.5M In Spending Cuts

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — The Rapid City school board will soon address a proposal that would lead to a salary increase for public school teachers at the expense of cutting $6.5 million from other programs.

The Rapid City Journal reports ( ) superintendent Tim Mitchell devised the spending-cut plan for the 2015-2016 school year. The school board is scheduled to discuss the proposal Tuesday.

Mitchell says the district needs “to be more competitive in the pay market.” He adds that the plan would stop the drain on the district’s reserve fund.

The proposal would eliminate support personnel who help students with math and literacy education. The cut in the district’s instructional-support staff would result in $5.1 million in savings.

A $250,000 cut in additional teacher pay and temporary teaching is also among the proposed reductions.
