SD Selects Qualifying Programs For Scholarship Program

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota officials have selected the more than 50 programs under which technical school students will qualify for scholarships partially funded by a $25 million donation from philanthropist T. Denny Sanford.

The programs fall under eight “high-need” industries, including automotive, building trades and construction, medical lab technicians and welding.

The state is matching Sanford’s gift by pledging $25 million of its own for the Build Dakota Scholarship Program. Officials say the program will help address a worker shortage that is hindering South Dakota’s growth.

Scholarships will be available for new, incoming students at the state’s technical schools in the 2015-2016 school year. Scholarship applications will be available starting Tuesday. State officials expect to award about 300 scholarships during the first year.
