Vermillion School Opt-out Of $880,000 Won’t Face Public Vote

VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) — Voters will not challenge the Vermillion School District’s proposal to continue an opt-out of property tax limits for another five years.

The school board last month approved to raise the annual opt-out from $800,000 to $880,000 to avoid budget cuts. The Press & Dakotan reports ( ) that after the notice of the opt-out was published, no one challenged it within the 20 days required by law, so it won’t be subject to a public vote.

The school board says the tax increase on a $200,000 house for the higher levy will amount to $23 more per year, or $250 total.
