Ag Dept.: Weather Conditions Create ‘very High Fire Danger’

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota agriculture officials say the current weather conditions have led to a “very high fire danger” in the Black Hills and grasslands.

Officials say the warmer weather conditions can cause burn piles to re-ignite if they have not been completely extinguished and aren’t cold to the touch.

Officials are reminding individuals who have burned brush piles within the last two weeks to check the piles to ensure that they are cold and totally extinguished.

Temperatures are expected to reach into the 60s over most of South Dakota Monday and Tuesday.

Parts of South Dakota on Wednesday could see temperatures creep into the 70s.

Officials say landowners or burn permit holders can be held financially liable if a pile starts a wildland fire.
