Daugaard Signs Bill To Increase Scholarship For New Students

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard has signed a measure to increase the amount of the state’s Opportunity Scholarship for new recipients.

Daugaard signed the proposal on Thursday. The measure allows incoming South Dakota students to receive up to $1,300 for their first three years of college and up to $2,600 for their fourth year.

Current students would not see increases.

Republican Sen. Deb Peters has said the increase for current students had to be removed after state economists predicted that revenue collections next budget year will fall short of previous projections. Lawmakers had to reduce the allocation to the scholarship bump by roughly $1 million.

South Dakota students have to meet certain academic requirements such as a qualifying ACT score and attend an in-state post-secondary institution to be eligible.
