Defense For Aberdeen Murder Suspect To Hire Law Students

ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) — Attorneys for an Aberdeen man accused of murder are being allowed to hire law students to help with the case.

The American News reports ( ) that Judge Scott Myren capped pay for the assistants at $3,000 and told defense attorneys for John Hemminger that they can ask to raise the total later, if necessary.

The 33-year-old Hemminger has pleaded not guilty to murder charges in the death of 26-year-old Jessica Goebel, who was stabbed Jan. 7 and died five days later. Court documents indicate Hemminger and Goebel had two children together.

The charges against Hemminger carry a potential death sentence.
