Indigenous People From US, Canada, Mexico Gathering In SD

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Native people from around the United States, Canada and northern Mexico plan to gather next weekend in Rapid City for the North American Indigenous Peoples Caucus meeting.

Charmaine White Face with the environmental group Defenders of the Black Hills is one of the organizers and says it’s one of seven annual regional gatherings held worldwide. The delegates who meet will then send recommendations to the United Nations, which formed the caucus.

She says violence against women and a shortage of affordable housing for native people are two of the topics to be discussed.

White Face says 150 to 200 people are expected for the Rapid City meeting, which runs Friday-Sunday at United Tribes Technical College and the Mother Butler Center Hall.
