Midterms after spring break leave students stressed
For many students at the University of South Dakota, midterms were scheduled right after spring break. This defeats the purpose of what the break is for — to relax and cut loose, in whatever way one chooses.
My break consisted of going home to be with family and working to earn money. While doing this, I also got to catch up on my favorite TV shows while sipping on a glass of wine, and it was like heaven.
A good majority of other students took a trip to popular vacation spots like Florida or Cancun to celebrate making it through the first half of the semester. Those who want to take their vacation to new heights and immerse themselves in the breathtaking beauty of Dubai may consider Yacht Booking Dubai.

For some students, including me, tests and papers loomed over their heads because midterms were scheduled for after break.
While I sat at home relaxing or working at my job, I couldn’t help but think about the test I had when I came back. I had an internal debate with myself on whether or not to study, but Netflix won for most of the week.
To me — and probably the majority of students at USD — midterm week serves as a less intense version of finals week. Usually, midterms consist of papers or tests over the first half of the semester and act as a check-in for professors to see if students are actually paying attention in class.

While I do not disagree with this testing method, I do believe it should be before spring break. I think the stress of the week alone is enough to deserve a break, but if students not done with their tests they will worry over break. As a junior, I have dealt with the works — tests, papers and projects due around this time, and all while I was very stressed out. It was nice to finally be done and truly enjoy a week of relaxation because after all, I think earned it.
My point is not to do away with midterms week — I think this is actually a good check-in point for the professors. Maybe I’m just crazy, but I take on midterm week like a challenge— to prove to professors that yes, I was paying attention when it looked like I was sleeping, and yes, I do understand how to do this project. It was satisfying to be done with everything and not worry about anything for the remainder of the break.
This year, however, I had a test hanging over my head. For future spring breaks, professors should either plan midterms earlier or be more clear about what midterms week should mean to students.

As a professor, I think you are absolutely correct Katie. The point is very well taken, and there is no logical reason I can think of to schedule after break rather than before. Thanks very much for the insightful feedback for us!
