Rapid City Civic Center Proponents Far Out-raise Opponents

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Proponents of a $180 million arena in Rapid City have raised a lot more campaign money than opponents.

KOTA-AM reports that pre-election financial statements from organizations for and against the Civic Center expansion project were released this week.

The group supporting the project, called Civic Center Expansion, raised just over $75,000. Most of that came from corporate donors representing hotels, restaurants, beer distributors and Coca-Cola, which has an exclusive contract for the key players in the effort. A handful of individuals donated just over $3,500.

Expansion opponents, called Vote No-Fix The Plan, collected $7,000. That group consists of five former mayors and a former city finance officer.

Rapid City residents vote Tuesday on the project that would replace the 9,400-seat Civic Center with a 19,000 building.
