Regents Vote To Allow NSU To Establish Confucius Institute

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The South Dakota Board of Regents has voted to allow Northern State University to create a Chinese language and cultural center that will be the first of its kind in the Dakotas and that officials hope will give the state a link to China’s growing economy.

The Board voted 7-0 to allow for the Aberdeen-based university to establish a Confucius Institute in conjunction with the University of Jinan in China. There are institutes in nearly every state except the Dakotas.

The regents pushed last summer for the Legislature to allocate $400,000 to fund the institute, but the memorandum agreed upon Wednesday shows that that money will now come from an anonymous private donor.

The institute would make Northern State the only school in South Dakota to offer Mandarin Chinese.
