SD Board Seeks Input On Proposed Name Change To Harney Peak

BLACK HILLS NATIONAL FOREST, S.D. (AP) — A South Dakota board is seeking the public’s input on the proposed name change to Harney Peak in Pennington County.

The South Dakota Board on Geographic Names says the new suggested name for the geographic feature is Black Elk Peak. The peak is located in the Black Hills National Forest, and it has been described as the highest summit in the U.S. east of the Rocky Mountains.

The peak was named for Army Gen. William S. Harney, who in 1855 led a command of soldiers that killed 86 Sioux in Nebraska.

Paul Soderman, Harney’s first cousin seven times removed, has previously written to the state board supporting a new name.

The board has scheduled five meetings to hear from the public and is also accepting written comments.
