Senate Votes To Not Increase Opportunity Scholarship
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The Senate has voted to continue funding the state Opportunity Scholarship without increasing the amount available per student.
Senators voted to amend the bill Tuesday that would have allowed South Dakota students to receive up to $1,300 for their first three years of college and up to $2,600 for their fourth year.
Republican Sen. Deb Peters says the increase had to be removed after state economists predicted that revenue collections next budget year will fall short of previous projections.
The bill would still allow students to receive up to $1,000 for their first three years of college and $2,000 for their fourth year.
South Dakota students have to meet certain academic requirements and attend an in-state post-secondary institution to be eligible.
The bill now returns to the full House.
