State House Passes Proposal To Hike Road And Bridge Funding

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The South Dakota House has approved a proposal to hike funding for roads and bridges as well as to raise the maximum allowed speed limit on interstate highways.

The House voted 54-14 for a modified version of the Senate’s transportation bill Tuesday.

Republican Rep. Mary Duvall says it’s time for lawmakers to address the state’s transportation infrastructure.

Republican Rep. Thomas Brunner argued against raising taxes on South Dakotans.

The House in committee limited gas tax increases in the plan to 2 cents per gallon for three years.

The committee also supported amendments further raising vehicle license plate fees.

One other change includes an increase in the maximum interstate speed limit to 80 mph. The proposal the House has passed includes more limited gas tax increases than those Senate lawmakers approved.
