South Dakota Weather Anchor To Testify Before Congress Panel

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A South Dakota weather anchor plans to testify before a U.S. Senate committee studying how weather information is communicated to and used by people, businesses and governments.

Chief meteorologist Jay Trobec of KELO-TV in Sioux Falls ( ) is first on the agenda at Wednesday’s hearing of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, which is chaired by Sen. John Thune.

Trobec was invited to Washington in his role as commissioner of professional affairs for the American Meteorological Society, which is an organization made up of 13,000 scientists around the world.

The committee says that from 2008 through 2013, U.S. weather events such as tornados, floods, and hurricanes cost an estimated $309 billion.
