Wessington Springs Getting Tree Planting Help After Tornado

WESSINGTON SPRINGS, S.D. (AP) — Wessington Springs is getting some tree planting advice from the South Dakota Department of Agriculture after many of the town’s trees were damaged by a tornado last summer.

The department’s Resource Conservation and Forestry Division is using a $10,000 federal grant to fund replanting in the communities that were affected by the June storms.

The division is working with the city to put together a list of trees to plant, determine planting locations and secure volunteers. The city plans to host a tree planting event in the fall that will include planting demonstrations, educational sessions and planting of trees around the community.

The twister that cut through town displaced nearly 80 people. The National Weather Service rated the tornado as an EF-2 and estimated its winds peaked at 127 mph.
