South Dakota Board Recommending Lakota Name For Harney Peak

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — The South Dakota Board on Geographic Names is recommending a Lakota name for Harney Peak in the Black Hills National Forest.

The Rapid City Journal reports ( ) that the public will be given 30 days to comment on the recommended name “Hinhan Kaga.” It’s believed that the phrase translates to “Making of Owls” in English.

The board will take a final vote after the comment period. The recommendation would then go to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names for a final decision.

The peak is described as the highest summit in the U.S. east of the Rocky Mountains.

It was named for Army Gen. William S. Harney, who in 1855 led soldiers who killed Sioux Indians in Nebraska. Some consider the current name offensive to American Indians.
