Legislators Call For Special Session To Talk Education Funds

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A handful of GOP lawmakers are pushing for a special legislative session to address education funding in South Dakota, but the state’s top Republican leaders say it’s unlikely that legislators will be called to Pierre soon.

Rep. Elizabeth May, who is backing the special session, says she plans to send letters to lawmakers Monday asking if they’ll support one.

The Republican from Kyle has criticized a task force of lawmakers and others studying South Dakota’s education funding for excluding the costs of the state’s adoption of the Common Core standards from discussions.

She says the group should be looking at all costs associated with education funding, not picking and choosing.

Republican legislative leaders Brian Gosch and Corey Brown say it’s unlikely the special session will get the support to proceed.
