Democrat Paula Hawks Starts Run Against US Rep. Kristi Noem
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Democratic state Rep. Paula Hawks has announced she is challenging Republican U.S. Rep. Kristi Noem in the 2016 elections for her spot in Congress.
Hawks is a two-term state representative from Hartford. She announced her plans Monday.
Hawks says South Dakota residents deserve better representation from someone who listens. She wants to focus on seniors, farmers and ranchers, equality for women, education and student loan debt.
She says she has talked to key Democratic leaders in South Dakota ahead of running, and she appears to be the first Democrat to announce a bid against Noem.
Noem had more than $1.2 million in the bank when she wrapped up the fundraising quarter that ended in June.
Noem won against her Democratic challenger by more than 30 percentage points in 2014.
