Pierre Seeking Federal Funding To Market Ailing Airport

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Officials in South Dakota’s capital city are seeking federal funding to promote its airport in an effort to bring back customers it’s lost in recent years.

The Pierre Regional Airport recently applied for $150,000 federal grant from the Small Community Air Service Development Program.

The Capital Journal reports ( ) the funds would make up most of a two-year $180,000 marketing campaign.

Mayor Laurie Gill says air service has never been this detrimental to the city in her political tenure.

Great Lakes currently provides flights from Pierre to Minneapolis and Denver, but canceled and delayed flights have been a problem. Only 9,174 passengers boarded Great Lakes planes at the airport in 2014.

Officials are waiting for the Federal Aviation Administration to decide whether Aerodynamics, Inc. can serve the city.
