Rounds And Thune Criticize Carbon Emission Reduction Plan
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota’s two Republican U.S. senators are criticizing the Obama administration’s plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions from power plants because they say it will hurt jobs and increase electricity rates.
U.S. Sens. John Thune and Mike Rounds said Monday the reductions would also threaten grid reliability.
The Environmental Protection Agency plan proposes to cut carbon emissions by 32 percent from 2005 levels by 2030.
South Dakota would reduce its rate by 47.6 percent from 2012 levels.
A policy aide to Republican Gov. Dennis Daugaard says the state is reviewing the final version of the rule.
Matt McLarty is a policy advocate for the Environmental Law and Policy Center in Sioux Falls. He says the reduction goal is an opportunity for South Dakota to increase renewable energy production for export.
