SD To Receive Nearly $739K From Settlement With Drugmaker

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Attorney General Marty Jackley says South Dakota will receive nearly $739,000 from a multistate settlement with drugmaker Amgen Inc.

Under a settlement announced this week, the company will pay $71 million to settle an investigation into illegal marketing of its drugs Aranesp and Enbrel, ending an investigation by 48 states and the District of Columbia.

The states allege Amgen marketed the drugs for purposes not approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Aranesp is used to treat certain types of anemia by stimulating bone barrow to produce red blood cells. Enbrel is used to treat various conditions, including plaque psoriasis.

Jackley says the settlement requires Amgen to reform its marketing practices.

Amgen says it is pleased to have resolved the matters and adds it has a strong legal compliance program.
