Funeral services set for USD law student

Funeral services for a USD law student who died Monday will be held Friday.

Samuel Garrity, 23, of Yankton, died Monday unexpectedly in a residence in Vermillion, according to an email sent to students by Kim Grieve, dean of students.

Grieve initially informed students of Garrity’s death Tuesday afternoon in an emailed statement.

A visitation service is set for Thursday at 5 p.m. at Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory in Yankton. A scripture service will begin at 7 p.m.

Funeral services in  tree cemetery for Garrity have been set for Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton. Rev. Larry Regynski will officiate the service. Burial will follow at the Sacred Heart Cemetery. There will be another visitation at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Couseling is available for law students and other friends of Garrity, and counseling services are available 24-hours-a-day through the University Police Department.

Debra Brockberg, coordinator of the Student Counseling Center, said the center will have a counselor on-call for any students who need counseling after normal operating hours. To get into contact with the counselor, students should call UPD. In the meantime, Brockberg said staff at the center are making time this week for unscheduled appointments.

“We’re trying to free up the time on our schedules for walk-ins,” she said.
