Three SGA Senate seats to be filled by Sept. 8
Three open seats in the Student Government Association Senate are expected to be filled by its second meeting Sept. 8.
Applications for the two first-year seats and one at-large seat are due Sept. 9, with interviews and a mock senate session to follow on Labor Day.
Junior Nathaniel Steinlicht, chair of the Internal Review Committee, said he’d like about 20 applications for the first-year seats and 15 for the at-large seat, though he’s not expecting that many.
Only about nine applications had been submitted as of Monday, Steinlicht said. Applications and a resume can be filled out online.
Around 40 students stopped by and signed in at the SGA booth during the Welcome Week student organization fair, SGA External Communications Manager Robert Peterson said.
“So there’s a descent amount of people interested in getting involved,” he said.
Interviews will be conducted by current senators, while the mock session will involve students who have previously served on SGA.
“We try to get a mix of different perspectives,” Steinlicht said.
Though he said the application process has not changed much, this year’s mock session will focus more on what applicants have to say, rather than how often they talk.
“People who bring new ideas wholeheartedly will do well,” Steinlicht said.
Steinlicht has been involved in SGA for more than two years. He said some of the best senators he’s met were accepted through the at-large process.
“It’s a really interesting process,” he said. “I like that it’s kind of an incubator for new ideas.”
