Sioux Falls Man On Trial For Allegedly Killing Girlfriend

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A Sioux Falls man accused of stabbing his girlfriend 14 times and killing her is on trial.

Michael Martinez is charged with second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter in the July 2014 death of 21-one-year-old Beverly Guerra. Authorities allege he stabbed her with a kitchen knife during an argument in their apartment.

Guerra’s 3- and 6-year-old children were in a back room during the incident. They were put in the custody of social service officials.

The Argus Leader reports ( ) that the trial is scheduled to run two weeks. Martinez could spend the rest of his life in prison if convicted.
