Officials Accepting Hazard Mitigation Grant Applications

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota public safety officials say local governments and certain nonprofit organizations can now apply for $440,000 in federal hazard mitigation grants.

The money is available as part of the presidential disaster declaration approved for a dozen counties and three tribes after June storms that are thought to have done $4 million in damage to public property.

Officials are hosting two conference calls this week to discuss grant requirements.

Disaster funding rules mandate that a percentage of the money is set aside for projects that could reduce or eliminate the effects of future disasters.

Applications for the funds are due by May 1.
