Ponca Tribe Of Nebraska To Mark Tribal Reinstatement

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska is preparing to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its restoration as a federally recognized nation.

Tribal councilman Phil Wendzillo says a powwow is scheduled for Saturday in Norfolk, one of the five offices for the tribe, which has its headquarters in Niobrara. According to Wendzillo, the tribe was terminated in 1962 and its land was sold off. Recognition of the tribe was restored on Oct. 31, 1990.

The tribe serves members in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota.

Wendzillo says the celebration will focus on honoring the tribe’s elders and the seven council members who have died since the restoration.

The Sioux City Journal ( ) reports that the event is free and open to the public.
