SGA swears in six at-large senators
Before closing its final meeting of the semester, six USD students were sworn into the positions of at-large Student Government Association senators, replacing those that will be graduating or leaving at the end of the semester.
Olivia Mann, Paul Rayapalli, Anna Madsen, Tim Flynn, Kevin Nam and Rose McLaughlin were all sworn in and given their positions during the meeting. Two were assigned to the Finance, State and Local and University Committees.
Mann said she wants to use her new position to help the university work on its inclusiveness.
“I was interested in SGA because I wanted to reach out to students and see how they interact with SGA,” Mann said. “But I was really interested in the university’s inclusiveness and wanted to be a part of that.”
Nam said he joined SGA because he participated in student council in high school and was naturally drawn to it.
“I’m a part of many student organizations, so I wanted to get involved in SGA. I applied to be a first-year senator, but after not being chosen for that, I applied for at-large,” Nam said.
Nam said he has a lot to look forward to as a senator.
“I’m excited to just be a part of it,” Nam said. “I’m excited to realize SGA’s potential. I’m ready to learn from the upperclassmen. I’m excited for the challenge of being in both student organizations and SGA and trying to balance them both.”
Mann said her main goal next semester is to educate students on how to be involved with SGA.
“I would like to see SGA be a part of the move-in packets,” Mann said. “I also want to see us update the safe zone training as well.”
Nam’s main goal is to learn what students are most affected by, he said.
“I want to look into how issues going on in the state are affecting USD students since I’m a part of the state and local committee,” Nam said. “I think all in all this will really test my problem solving skills.”
SGA meetings are finished for the semester and will start up again in January with the announcement of SGA presidential candidates.
