Local rummage pages make buying, selling simple

College students and community members looking to make a little extra cash or snag a good deal have come together to make two Vermillion rummage pages on Facebook.

They are closed groups, but after joining, members are able to buy, sell, trade or advertise their products. Items posted recently range from crafts and formal dresses to electric mopeds and cars.

Quentin Long, a single father from Chamberlain, uses the page to gain exposure for his hobby of repairing items. He said he likes to use all means of free exposure that are available, including other groups and apps as well.

“I post in many other groups, about 25 total all over the region,” he said.

Long has been using the page for about three months and said he finds it to be a great way to get the word out for free.

Audrey Kost lives in Lennox, S.D., and has a daughter who’s a senior at USD. She said her reasons for using the page vary.

She’s been a member since December, but only recently began using the page to try to sell a few formal dresses. Although Kost has not purchased anything or made a sale yet, she said accessing and posting to the page is simple.

Both of the pages can be found by searching Facebook for ‘Vermillion Rummage.’ One is called Vermillion Online Rummage Sale, and has 7,399 members. The other is Vermillion, S.D. Rummage Sale, which has 3,763 members.

On Vermillion, S.D. Rummage Sale, there are four basic rules: delete items or comment ‘sold’ when they’ve been sold, don’t ask half or less of the original asking price until at least a week has passed, only repost every 24 hours and members must be 18 to join. If members don’t follow these rules, there’s a risk of getting deleted from the group.

The Vermillion Online Rummage Sale page doesn’t have an age limit. The page states that they don’t want any listings that involve alcohol, firearms or ammo, illegal substances or adult material.

On both pages, each post should include price, location, a photo and/or description of the item and delivery and pick-up options. Posts should be tracked by the sellers and sellers are expected to respond in a timely manner and remove posts when they’re no longer active.

Interested buyers can also ask questions or make offers through comments on the post or Facebook messages to the seller.
