Society needs to stray away from ‘normalcy’

As I’ve grown up, I’ve come to the realization that people who stray from the norms of society are great, bold, artistic and brave individuals.

They proudly display who they are and don’t let anyone dictate their lives, and I find that inspiring. Many students I’ve seen on campus and people I know personally embody this idea, and I find that amazing.

I’ve seen the boy with blue hair and the girl who embraces 80s nostalgia with colorful scrunchies in her hair. I’ve seen quite a bit, and I find it stimulating that people push others’ judgement out of their minds and just do what makes them happy.

What I don’t find acceptable is that not every person feels quite the same way about this as I do. Not every person is open to the idea of individuals expressing who they are. Instead, they tear down those who try to do so.

I recently read a news story in which a waitress from Iowa was stiffed on a tip, because, according to the note the customer wrote on her receipt, “Tips are only for normal looking people.”

This is appalling to me.

To refuse to tip someone, who, I might add, relies on tips in order to make a living, is a ridiculous way for a person to show that he or she doesn’t agree with someone’s choices regarding his or her appearance.

Even if a person isn’t a fan of how some people look, this doesn’t grant that person the right to disrespect them.

It should also be noted that this waitress was gorgeous.

Sure, maybe her pink curly hair and choice of accessories is unconventional to some people, but that’s what makes her an individual. It’s what she likes, and if she isn’t purposefully trying to offend anyone by looking how she chooses, then no one has the right to try and change her.

This goes for all cases, for every person who’s been judged or wrongfully treated because they don’t fit into society’s perception of “normal.”

All I have to say is that those people who believe everyone must look or be a certain way in order to be accepted are wrong.

I also find it quite ironic because, frankly, those who get the most success in life are those who stray from the norm and are different. They are those who personally label themselves as weird or unconventional.

Just turn a page in Cosmopolitan magazine and anyone can see a picture of Lady Gaga at an awards show in one of her most recent, latest and greatest outfits.

Simply put, the abnormal is what catches our attention, it’s what interests us, it’s what makes life fun and exciting and it makes us who we are.

Everyone needs to lose this idea that “normal” is the only thing acceptable in this world. Because it isn’t.

What is acceptable is acknowledging the fact that everyone is different, and they’re entitled to embracing these differences.

Being “normal” will only get us so far in life.
