SGA considers allocating $9,000 for CDC media center
The students at the Center for Diversity & Community might be getting a brand new 80-inch television thanks to a Student Government Association resolution proposed Tuesday evening.
Senate Resolution No. 15 would contribute $9,000 in funds to the Center for Diversity & Community to fulfill their hopes of creating a media center within the CDC office.
The CDC is a place where a diverse number of students go to study and to socialize, according to Lamont Sellers, the director of the CDC and the associate vice president for diversity at USD. Sellers said the number of students who visit the CDC has reached about 2,000.
At-large Senator Olivia Mann is one student who frequently goes to the CDC.
“It’s been a home to me, and it’s been a home to dozens of other students,” Mann said.
As well as it being a place for students to go to socialize and study, the CDC is used as a meeting space and area to host activities. If the resolution is passed, the CDC will receive funds to upgrade their media for the benefit of the meetings held there. With the 40-inch TV that they currently have, Sellers says it’s difficult to have important presentations. They hope to upgrade to an 80-inch TV, and hope to set up Direct TV, Apple TV and get set up the TV for video conferencing.
“With the new media center, you will be able to hear much better and be able to see it,” Sellers said.
The resolution was open for discussion. At-large Senator Teagan McNary thought that giving to the CDC would be a good idea.
“Allocating this amount of money is a good idea because it stays on campus, and it’s important to note that it is benefiting the students on campus,” McNary said.
The president of the international club and at-large senator Prakriti Rajbhandari agreed with McNary.
“This money would not only be investing in equipment, but investing in the students,” Rajbhandari said.
Resolution No. 15 will be voted on next Tuesday evening.
